Clévia equips Biomax, Grenoble Alpes Métropole’s new energy production unit

Our Clévia brand’s employees have been appointed to install a new biomass energy production unit. The contract was signed as part of a public service delegation entrusted to the semi-public company CCIAG (Compagnie de chauffage intercommunale de l’agglomération grenobloise) by Grenoble Alpes Métropole.

Biomax is a cogeneration plant which can produce heat and electricity from a 40 MW steam generator. The heat produced in this way is mainly distributed in the district heating network, but it is also used to produce electricity using a turbo generator set.

Our HVAC and energy engineering experts handled the implementation study, supply, manufacturing, assembly and commissioning of the Biomax plant’s thermo-electric equipment. They also deployed the back pressure turbo generator set with 9 MW of electrical power, two steam condensers for superheated water production (40 MW thermal power) and three heat storage tanks for the superheated water, each with capacity of 10 MW, totalling 30 MW: a first for France! Our teams also installed utilities for the cogeneration plant’s special fluids : softened water, demineralized water, compressed air and cooling water.

In the long term, Biomax will produce 220 GWh of energy a year: 183 GWh of heat and 37 GWh of electricity. The plant will consume 85,000 tonnes of wood per year (92 % from forestry chips and 8 % recycled wood). It should enable the CCIAG to supply between 15,000 et 20,000 homes with district heating and 10,000 homes with electricity, while saving around 12,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
