According to a World Bank report, 840 million people did not have access to electricity in 2019.   Whereas, electricity transmission and distribution are now vital to the development and attractiveness of a country. In addition to being accessible, energy must now be sustainable, clean, economical and produced close to where it is needed in order to meet the objective of providing electricity to as many people as possible. 

With long-standing expertise in this field, Eiffage Énergie Systèmes responds to the needs of the regions when managing large-scale projects by being at the forefront of innovation and at the service of transport infrastructure and power-grid operators. 

 

 

Supporting the electrification of West Africa

Electrification of West afrca
West Africa is currently booming. Between the electrification of new areas and the renovation of older networks, it is now a matter of installing power lines and interconnections, and increasing the region’s initial power to meet growing demand.

In Benin, as in Ghana, our teams of electricians contribute to the improvement of electricity distribution networks and contribute, at their level, to the socio-economic development of the countries concerned. These projects, from Cotonou to Accra, form part of MCC contracts. 
 
Other countries, such as Senegal, are also developing and have seen their need for electricity grow. They require new infrastructure to continue to build a national power grid. We have therefore expanded a 225 kV electrical loop between Fatick and Kaolack, two towns located in the west of Senegal and about fifty kilometres apart.
 

Promoting sustainable, clean and economical energy

More than simply a matter of producing electricity, it is important that developing and industrialised countries produce sustainable and clean energy close to where it is needed. The energy transition process thus becomes an economic, social and environmental opportunity and an important development factor for all countries. 
Eiffage Énergie Systèmes responds to this process by providing and distributing electricity from renewable energy sources. Our teams have developed a turnkey model based on solar farms. The latter produce sustainable, clean and economical alternative energy and connect to the grid to power neighbouring towns and cities. Spain, Mauritania, Chile and Jamaica are deploying these alternative energy solutions. 

In addition to the construction of these facilities, Eiffage Énergie Systèmes provides remote maintenance and control to monitor power generation and distribution in real time. In total, since 2010, more than 1.6 GW of electricity have been delivered by our 50 solar power plants around the world.

High voltage (HV) and very high voltage (VHV) power lines are the main types of energy infrastructure in France. With the development of new technologies and the increase in the number of inhabitants in some towns, this network is often close to reaching maximum capacity. It therefore needs to be rebuilt and reinforced.

Eiffage Énergie Systèmes is in charge of one of the most ambitious projects in this area: the reconstruction of the VHV power line between Avelin and Gavrelle. This new 30 km power line has to supply 530 towns in Hauts-de-France, or 1.7 million inhabitants. Our teams have worked on the design of new electric pylons. These new-generation pylons, known as “Équilibre”, arose from our engineering studies. They are designed to blend into the landscape and limit the emission of electromagnetic fields. 

 

Our expertise in electricity transmission and distribution is also recognised in Europe. Belgium called on Eiffage Énergie Systèmes teams to secure the electricity supply of the port of Antwerp. 
For this complex site, we erected and installed cables on two 192 m electric pylons on either side of the Escaut river. In total, 3,000 tonnes of rockfill, 130 tonnes of steel reinforcements, 4,500 m³ of concrete and 104 piles, from 20 to 27 metres in length, were installed.
