Eiffage Énergie Systèmes is building Benin’s biggest solar power plant in the village of Illoulofin (Pobé)
Beninese Electrical Energy Company SBEE has appointed Eiffage Énergie Systèmes’ teams (and teams from our subsidiary RMT in particular) to build a photovoltaic solar power plant and a high-voltage bay enabling the plant to be connected up to the national power grid. Onigbolo power plant construction project, known as Defissol, is co-funded by the European Union (EU), French Development Agency (AFD) and the SBEE. It should allow Benin to reduce its energy bill, while enhancing the value of renewable energies.
As part of the Defissol project, our RMT specialists are to install 47,212 photovoltaic modules of 530 Wc each (the plant will total 25.85 MWc of power output), string inverters and six 3 MVA power transformer substations.
The project is an example of synergy between Eiffage Energie Systèmes’ subsidiaries, since employees from our subsidiary Eiffage Énergie Systèmes T&D will be in charge of connecting up Onigbolo’s photovoltaic field to Pobé source substation. The electricity generated will be injected into the SBEE grid via a 161-kV HV link
Illoulofin solar power plant will enable 35 GWh of electricity per year to be generated, covering the energy consumption of 180,000 people. Defissol is the flagship project in the Beninese government’s Action Programme (PAG) orchestrated by the President of the Republic. It will allow an annual 23,000-tonne reduction in the country’s CO2 emissions (or 575,000 tonnes over 25 years, which is the facility’s estimated life span).
The solar plant will take 15 months to build on the 26-hectare Onigbolo site. On completion, RMT is to carry out technical assistance for operation and maintenance and train the SBEE’s staff for three years.
